Vintage Large Sakiori Kotatsu Cover

A five-panel vintage 'sakiori' rag-weaving cloth, made from shredded strips of recycled kimono and futon covers. Originally, it served as a 'Kotatsu' cover blanket. The backing consists of recycled old indigo cotton pieces and some vintage red synthetic materials.

The history of 'sakiori' weaving dates back to the mid-Edo period in the Tohoku region. During that time, cotton and silk were expensive, and the cold climate made fabric highly valuable. This led to the development of a technique where old, worn-out fabric was not discarded but instead repurposed as part of new textiles.

This piece showcases the traditional Japanese practice of 'mottainai,' emphasising the reuse and repurposing of materials. Its unique weaving technique and rich history make it a meaningful addition to any collection.

It is in good pre-loved condition, though some areas show signs of damage.
