Rare Vintage Men’s Silk Haori with Hand-Painted Shunga Lining

A vintage men’s silk haori featuring a highly unusual and collectible haura (lining) decorated with a hand-painted shunga scene. Shunga, or erotic art, was a popular form of ukiyo-e during the Edo period, admired not only for its subject matter but also for its artistry and playful expression of human intimacy.

This piece shows some signs of wear, with stains on both the outer fabric and lining (see the last five photos). The stains on the outer silk, mainly around the sleeves, are subtle and camouflaged by the brown weave.

A remarkable garment and a rare find for textile collectors and enthusiasts of Japanese art history.
