Antique Indigo Tsutsugaki Cotton

A large four-and-a-half paneled indigo 'tsutsugaki' dyed cotton piece from the late 19th century. 'Tsutsugaki' is a traditional Japanese resist dyeing technique where rice paste is used for freehand drawing on cloth.

This piece was originally a large padded kimono called 'yogi', which functioned as a futon, then was reconstructed into one large panel. The 'noshi' motif symbolizes longevity.

It features some patches that add character, making it an ideal piece to hang as wall art.
