Vintage Kakishibu Dyed Cotton Zabuton

A vintage Japanese zabuton (traditional floor cushion) made from sakabukuro (sake brewing bags) dyed with kakishibu, fermented persimmon tannin. Originally made as durable cotton bags used in sake production, the fabric was repurposed into these simple zabuton covers, giving the material a second life.

The rich brown colour has developed naturally through the kakishibu dyeing process and years of use, creating a beautifully aged surface with subtle tonal variations. Each cushion still contains its original cotton wadding, although decades of use have compressed the filling, making it much thinner than when new.

These pieces work equally well as decorative floor cushions, seat pads, or simply as beautiful examples of traditional Japanese utilitarian textiles.

They are in good vintage condition with expected signs of age and use, including light wear, fading and surface marks.

Three available. They are very similar in colour and condition. Your cushion will be selected at random. If you would like to choose a particular one, please contact us before purchasing and we will happily send additional photographs.
