Vintage Large Sakiori Weaving Piece
A five-panel vintage sakiori rag-weaving cloth made from shredded strips of recycled kimono and futon cover fabrics. Woven in warm tones of orange, pink, brown, grey and muted green, the textile displays the rich irregular texture characteristic of traditional sakiori weaving. The reverse side reveals small colourful fabric ends emerging through the weave, highlighting the layered construction of reused materials.
The history of sakiori weaving dates back to the mid-Edo period in the Tohoku region. At the time, cotton and silk were valuable materials, and old textiles were carefully reused rather than discarded. Worn fabrics were torn into narrow strips and rewoven into new utilitarian cloths for continued use.
Originally made as an everyday household textile in the mid 20th century, this piece reflects the long tradition of reuse and practical craftsmanship in rural Japan. This piece is in great condition for its age, with no major wear.
